Mercedes College offers the following programmes: PYP, MYP, and Diploma.

Mercedes College is proudly a Catholic school in the Mercy tradition. We enjoy a reputation for academic excellence, and of educating young people to serve as school and community leaders. PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)

The PYP is a curriculum framework focusing on the holistic growth of the child based on an inquiry

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)

The MYP is based on three fundamental concepts: Holistic learning Intercultural awareness Communication The curriculum model provides a core of eight disciplines of study, through which five transdisciplinary understandings or Areas of Interaction are developed. The eight subject groups are: Language A: Language of instruction (English) Language B: French/Indonesian Humanities History and Geography Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics Mathematics Arts: Visual Arts and Performing Arts Physical Education Technology The Areas of Interaction are: Approaches to learning Community and Service Health and Social Education Environment Homo Faber (processes and products of human creativity) In the final year of their MYP, students undertake a Personal Project – an independent and significant piece of work that is intended to be the culmination of the student’s involvement with the five areas of interaction.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised matriculation certificate which qualifies students for entry into overseas universities as well as Australian universities. To be eligible for the Diploma, candidates must complete to a satisfactory standard: Six academic subjects A Theory of Knowledge course An Extended Essay Creativity Action and Service (CAS) The academic subjects available at Mercedes College from the six subject groups are: Group 1 Language A (first language) Group 2 Language B (second language: French/Indonesian/ESL) Group 3 Study of Individuals in Society (History/Economics) Group 4 Experimental Sciences (Biology/Chemistry/Physics) Group 5 Mathematics (Mathematics, Mathematical Studies) Group 6 Options (Art/Design or Theatre Arts or Music or another Language or a second subject from the Study of Individuals in Society or a second subject from Experimental Sciences Students must take at least one subject from each of the subject groups

What is the IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools.

The three IB programmes for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. There are approximately one million IB students at over three thousand schools in more than 140 countries.
