The International School of Suva was founded in 1973 to serve the needs of the International community in Suva and to provide an alternative type of school for the Fiji citizens. The current role is approximately 650 with 50 in pre-school, 350 in primary school (years 1 to 6) and 250 in secondary (years 7 to 12). Approximately 40% of the students are citizens of Fiji and at least 30 other nationalities are represented. The curriculum has a strong emphasis on practical and creative skills and language is taught from year 7. The school does the IGCSE examinations at year 11 and have recently introduced the IB Middle Years Programme, making this school one of the the few full IB schools.

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme has been specifically chosen by ISS because of its authenticity as an international curriculum framework. Its philosophy and methodology specifically suit students in the middle years, and it provides a natural progression from primary school through to the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme at senior secondary level. The MYP is a five year programme for students aged between 11 - 16 years in Years 7 - 11. It officially started at ISS in January 1998. Students follow a broad based course which includes English, a Foreign Language, Combined Sciences, History and Geography, Visual and Performing Arts, Technology, Mathematics and Physical Education.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

The International School of Suva have offered the IB programme since 1992 and provided both the diploma and certificate courses. We now offer no local examinations and all year 12 and 13 follow the IB programme. Subjects offered are: Group 1; Languages A: English, French and other languages if a suitable tutor can be found. (we have had students doing Chinese and German) Group 2; Languages B: English, French, Japanese, Spanish Ab Initio. Group 3; Individuals and Society: History, Geography, Informationand Technology in a Global Society. Group 4; Experimental Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Group 5; Mathematics: Mathematics, Mathematics Methods, Mathematical Studies. Group 6; Art/Design, Computer Science We have written the programmes and have introduced to school based subjects for the first time this year Fijian Studies and Accounting.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools.

The three IB programmes for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. There are approximately one million IB students at over three thousand schools in more than 140 countries.
